Choose the role of the speaker
Start by deciding what the speaker must do in the room. A floor-standing Focal system suits larger listening spaces, serious stereo playback and front left/right cinema channels where scale and bass authority matter. Bookshelf models can be more accurate in compact rooms when placed on proper stands, and they often make excellent surrounds or desktop speakers when the listening distance is short. For mixed-use homes, the decision should include furniture layout, amplifier power, desired bass extension and whether a subwoofer will handle the lowest octaves.
